Bible & Literature

Mr. Cox

Curriculum Standards & Objectives

Course Description:

This course is designed to explore the Bible as a work of literature, viewing various pieces as  different genres of writing, such as historical narrative, poetry, and wisdom literature.  Extra-Biblical literature, such as poetry, short stories, and novels from other eras, will be analyzed in light of its content-based and stylistic allusions to Biblical material.  While the Bible is a foundation for many of the world’s major religions, this course is not a religious studies course; however, religion-inclusive discussions may arise from the readings.

Course Expectations:

The student is ultimately responsible for his/her own performance in this course.  He/she should be prepared to follow these basic academic expectations:

  1. keep a class notebook which will consist of paper, notes, and all completed classwork.
  2. double-space type all formal essays with complete MLA formatting.
  3. submit work on time.  NO late work will be accepted.  Students with excused absences must obtain the missing assignments from a classmate or the teacher and ask for the paperwork before or after class.  He/She will be given the number of days absent to make up the work (up to 1 week).
  4. expect homework regularly.
  5. Actively participate in class, as this will be a component of the final grade.  Obviously, excessive absences will hinder acquisition of these points.
